Frequently Asked Questions

Is the app secure? Who can see my journal?

Your journal entries are stored in your personal iCloud account, which only you can access. We use Supabase for sign-in (email and password), but your journal content never leaves Apple’s infrastructure. We don’t read, share, or sell your data.

What happens if I delete the app?

Your journal is saved to iCloud automatically. If you delete and reinstall the app, your entries come back as soon as you sign in — including signatures and stamps. Remember that your state sets how long notarial records must be kept, so removing the app does not end your retention obligation.

Does the app replace my notary commission or legal responsibility?

No. My Notary Book is a record-keeping tool. You are still solely responsible for understanding and complying with your state’s notary laws. Always verify that electronic journals are permitted in your state before using the app for official records — you can check your own jurisdiction in our 51-state Notary Rules reference.

I forgot my password. How do I reset it?

From the sign-in screen, tap "Forgot Password." You’ll receive an email with a reset link. Tap the link from your device (not a desktop) to reset directly in the app.

Identification

  • The form warns you the moment a scanned ID isn’t accepted in your state — signer, secondary, or witness — with the same red sheet you get for an ID type you’ve turned off. Use it anyway for this entry only, or pick a different ID.
  • The secondary ID scanner reads passports and other MRZ cards, not just barcodes.
  • Salvadoran national IDs and other cards with extended document numbers no longer trigger a false checksum warning.
  • A misread name line no longer locks the scanner; it waits for a clean frame.
  • Typing a jurisdiction fills the issuing entity for the secondary ID and both witnesses, as it already did for the signer.
  • The scanner closes itself after its guidance runs out, instead of running the camera until you cancel.

Commission settings

  • One Commission Preset now governs Form & Print, ID Types and Fees together. Save it as a profile; switch profiles and every page follows.
  • The preset picker lives on the commission card, with one Save and one Update & Reset per commission.
  • Before you save, a What Changed list shows every difference — field by field, before and after.
  • Undo a change and the commission reads clean again; close the app with unsaved changes and they’re gone on relaunch.
  • Custom ID types you add are yours: they survive presets, resets, profile switches and profile deletes.

Journal History

  • Fixed a freeze when scrolling a long journal.
  • Returning from an entry keeps your place in the list.

Elsewhere

  • Adding a commission works on the first try.
  • Consent alerts have short titles that never cut off; the field in question is named in bold in the body.
  • New voice prompts and chimes for the scanner and signature pad.
  • Profile photo placeholder styling.

Commission settings

  • Fees now live inside Form & Print: Fee Charged is the one switch, and each fee’s default amount sits in that field’s own settings. The Fees page is gone.
  • A Track Fees in Stats toggle on the commission card decides whether a commission’s revenue counts in Statistics.

Signature pad

  • A voice prompt tells the signer how to sign and where to tap when any signature pad opens. It has its own switch in Audio Assistant, separate from the scanner’s.
  • The Done button on every pad is green, to match.

Notary stamp

  • Upload a photo of your stamp and the paper disappears — the stamp lands on the certificate as ink on a clear background. Works from a scan or straight from the camera (flash on).
  • Change your stamp without the wait: processing is instant and shows a spinner.

Main menu

  • Today’s date on the left of your photo, your commission number on the right. With more than one commission, it shows the one for the state you’re in.

Features page

  • Feature descriptions show again (they had gone blank).

Location of the act

  • Record where a notarization happened at the level your state calls for — city and county, or the full street address.
  • Set a business address on a commission and new entries use it, so the app doesn’t reach for GPS on every act.
  • Switch a single entry to the device’s location when you’re working away from your desk.
  • The act’s address now reaches the certificate, the ledger and the CSV, and survives a backup.

Journal entries

  • Loading a signer from history brings their second ID with them.
  • A second ID only follows a signer into a state that asks for one.
  • An 18+ age check can confirm a signer’s age without storing their date of birth.

Main menu

  • A new menu with its own artwork, and your commission list one tap from New Entry when you hold more than one.
  • Today’s date turns to reveal your photo.

Statistics

  • The activity chart keeps its shape when you switch between 7, 30 and 365 days.
  • Document Categories has its own date range, independent of the chart above it.

Fees

  • Your state’s maximum notary fee is filled in for you. States without a statutory cap start empty.

Settings

  • Changing your account — email, password, deletion — is in plain view on the profile page.
  • The list of what you changed in Form & Print now names the credential in plain English.
